Surf Coast Plastic Wise Events and Markets Policy
Surf Coast Shire Council is committed to eliminating single-use plastics at events and markets held in the Surf Coast Shire. It has developed a Plastic Wise Events and Markets Policy that requires event organisers to work with their stallholders, sponsors, contractors, volunteers, participants and patrons to use alternatives to single-use and disposable plastic bags, packaging and promotional materials.
Event organisers have enthusiastically taken up the challenge of eliminating single-use plastics from their events. Here are just some examples of plastic wise events:
- Nightjar Festival
- RipCurl Pro 2018
- Anglesea Primary School Fair
- Cowrie Market has focused on eliminating single-use plastics from their markets and diverted 63% of their waste from landfill at their December 2018 market.
With a philosophy of ‘the more of us that tackle single-use plastics the better’, the Surf Coast Shire Council has shared its policy with a number of other councils and agencies who are looking to introduce similar measures.
This forward-thinking policy won a Keep Victoria Beautiful award (Community Government Partnerships category) in 2018 and was recognised as a finalist for the LGPro Sustainability Award in 2019.
