Let’s Go FOGO

Let’s Go FOGO is a joint project between Moyne, Corangamite and Southern Grampians Shire Councils that aims to increase the amount of food waste collected in the kerbside Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.

All three councils have provided a FOGO collection service to residents for several years. The organic material collected in these bins is composted and returned to the land. Bins audits revealed that while residents are good at putting their garden waste in their FOGO bin, they are still putting most of their food waste into the rubbish bin instead of the FOGO bin.

Through the Let’s Go FOGO project, councils have undertaken extensive research to understand resident’s behaviours around food waste. Based on this research, the project identifies and tests ‘interventions’ that aim to get residents to put their food waste in the FOGO bin. Some of these interventions include providing residents with kitchen caddies and compostable liners to make it easier to collect food waste in the kitchen and education material regarding what can and can’t go into the FOGO bins.

The project is currently testing different interventions so it’s still too early to measure the project’s success. Participating councils are however already starting to see a reduction in the amount of food waste going to landfill as residents embrace the Let’s Go FOGO motto.
