Business Clean Up Australia Day
On the 2nd of March the Barwon South West Waste and Resource Recovery Group team and (Conservation Volunteers Australia) Working for Victoria Team joined Caring for our Bays staff to take part in the Businesses Clean up Australia Day event at St Helens Jetty, North Geelong.
The team spent an hour collecting litter from the edges of Corio Bay at the fishing spot popular for catching flathead, gurnard and snook.
Approximately 20kg of litter was collected from the site mostly comprising of various fishing paraphernalia and related litter (cigarette butts, bait bags, meat trays, wet wipes, beverage bottles and cans) along with an astonishing 172 pieces of fishing line. It was particularly satisfying to remove fishing line from the environment which was on the cusp of entering the bay and posing a serious risk to wildlife.
